Love Buzz by Neely Tubati Alexander is a heartfelt story about an off-chance romantic encounter during a crazy night at a Mardi Gras bachelorette party. The novel follows 30 year-old Serena Khan, who originally was not enjoying her cousin’s four-day long New Orleans bachelorette party. Until she meets Julian, her mystery man. Unfortunately their encounter is cut short by a couple drunk bridesmaids and one seriously wasted bride. After only learning a few clues about Julian, she is determined to find him again. Alongside these problems, Serena is battling between making her mother proud and trying to find her true passion.
Overall, I thought that the book was really good and I would read it again. From the first chapter I could tell that it was going to be a good book. Alexander did a good job of contrasting the love story blossoming between Serena and Julian but also the battles Serena was simultaneously facing. As someone who has also had mom issues, it was almost empowering to read about Serena finally standing up for herself against her mom. I was overjoyed with the fact that she built up the motivation to destroy the life her mom wanted for her and instead started her new refreshed life. To watch her go from this straight-edged, almost uptight character to a confident, upbeat, and empowering woman was inspiring to not only me but I’m sure many other women reading this book.
My only critique is that I wish we got even more information from Julian’s side of the story. We see bits and pieces of him but I wish Alexander explored the idea of possibly swapping point of views in some chapters. Besides that small “problem”, I adored the romance between these two. Both spent multiple days trying to find each other because they made the mistake of not exchanging any personal information. It was beautiful to watch both sides almost lose hope in one another just for them to run into each other yet again. Like I said previously, I would read this book many times again and I would even recommend it to romance lovers.
