Playboi Carti’s Die Lit album came out 8 years ago today. After dropping his self-titled mixtape “Playboi Carti,” people wondered what was next, and just like that, his official debut album “Die Lit” dropped on May 11, featuring guest appearances from Skepta, Travis Scott, Lil Uzi Vert, ect. The album is now considered one of the most influential rap records of the past decade, though at one point its release was not certain.
Die Lit debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 when it first dropped. It has 19 tracks with songs such as “Fell in Luv”, “Long Time-Intro”, and “R.I.P” being its most played songs on the album. This album set an early blueprint for the underground rap scene, a sound that would be fully developed in his next album, “Whole Lotta Red” in 2020.
More than eight years later, there’s plenty to remember about the Atlanta rapper’s debut album. The album cover represents rebellion and living life to the fullest until you die. Ethereal also influenced this album a lot, but it goes unnoticed. In 2018, Carti did an interview with Dazed Media and shouted out Ethereal: “ Shoutout to Ethereal. When I met him, I was looking for shit that he was already doing. I was like, Wow. This is the guy. Ethereal is a legend…without him, I don’t know where the fuck I’d be. He’s a good dude. So talented. He’s another GOAT. I’m not even talking about his music right now. As a human, that man is a really good dude. He took me in when I was skipping school. Took me on the road, started going crazy. My senior year of high school, he and Father and Key! started going crazy, making all these tracks.”
Playboi Carti Album after all these years stands tall with over 1.5 million sales, making some of the biggest song for fans, and not last but making an impact of the underground rap scene, Die Lit.
