On January 7th, 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good was shot by an ICE agent in her car. The aftermath left the residents and politicians of Minnesota telling ICE to leave the state after this event, and pleaded with the government to tell the truth about what happened with this shooting.
The videos that have been released on this shooting show a seemingly innocent scene. The ICE agents approached Good’s car, which was blocking part of the street. As an agent yelled for the woman to get out of the car, another agent walked up to the car and kept trying to open the driver’s door. As the car began to pull away, another officer was standing at the front of the vehicle, recording the scene. The car pulled closer to him, but it is unclear from video footage what actually happened. The controversy of whether the car could hit the agent was discussed greatly after the shooting.
When the woman tried to drive away, the officer standing near the front of the car shot in the direction of the driver’s side of the car multiple times. The car continued to drive away from the officer before crashing into a light post. Renee Gold, the woman driving, was pronounced dead due to the shots that had been fired.
In response, the Administration-specifically Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and President Trump-backed the ICE agent that shot Gold, saying that the woman was trying to use her vehicle to kill and harm the federal agents. Noem called the situation an ‘act of domestic terrorism’. The Administration also stated that the officer shot at the women in an act of self-defense.
In the days following the shooting, multiple videos have been released of the shooting at all angles. Floral tributes were laid at the location where Good’s car crashed. The next day, multiple protests in cities like Cincinnati, Houston, Washington D.C. and Philadelphia sprung up, with some signage that the protesters held, which asked for ICE to be abolished.
The state of Minnesota filed a lawsuit against the Trump Administration on January 12th, as an attempt to end the surge of ICE agents that have appeared in the state. There has been no response from the administration so far.
