Most writers have a peak, you know, that spike in popularity. Then they fade away, and new authors take their podium. Stephen King apparently wanted to break the rules. Decades after his first book, he is still one of the most recognizable authors in the world. This year, King is not just in the past, but he’s shaping the future, the future of horror.
He published his first book, Carrie, in the 1970s. The book quickly became a fan favorite and helped King develop his ideas into more than just a dream. He suddenly became the face of horror, or as most refer to him as, “King of Horror”, after publishing The Shining. If you thought these were good, this was just the start of King’s career.
What makes King’s success so memorable is that he hasn’t slowed down. In fact, Stephen King has written 67 novels since the 1970s. He continues to shock fans with new books that attract both haters and fans. In 2025, King released Never Flinch, which is more psychologically deep. While his new book Other Worlds Than These is set to release in late 2026, fans are excited to see the last of King’s ongoing story of Jack Sawyer.
King also keeps fans reeled in by connecting all of his stories. Many of his books are in the same universe and even share subtle easter eggs and links with one another. The Dark Tower series is a central point for many of his books. It inspires fans to read and explore all of his work, to find all the easter eggs and connections he has made.
King’s influence on horror is beyond words, literally. King has made many movie adaptations of his works. Bringing his stories to people who may not love to read but still enjoy the story. These adaptations help maintain his presence and help him tell his stories from multiple perspectives.
As the years go by, King’s fame continues to grow. He remains on his throne, he claimed years ago. Many have tried to take his place, but it’s obvious to see no one can replace “The King of Horror”.
