The big-budget Sci-Fi movie Project Hail Mary, based on Andy Meir’s 2021 novel, releases in theaters on March 20th. The film stars Ryan Gosling, who plays Ryland Grace, a science teacher turned astronaut. The aspect that makes this movie stand out is the fact that not a single greenscreen or bluescreen was used to film it. Most sci-fi movies seen today heavily rely on green-screening, CGI, and even AI to create fictional characters. However, while it may seem like a real hail mary, an impossibility, this new film does not tap into any of that.
Synopsis
Ryland Grace wakes up with amnesia in Space, only to realize that he is the only one who survived from the crew. He realizes that he is on a mission to discover the mysterious substance that is causing the Sun to die and has to save Earth. He believes he has to do it on his own, but that is not the case when Grace discovers that Rocky, an alien, is trying to save his world from the same fate.
Aliens are Real
Rocky was not greenscreen or heavily CGI, which makes the movie more realistic. All the spaceship sets were hand-built as well. Co-director Christopher Miller said that filming felt much more effective and that everything was really captured in the moment. He hopes the acting will feel a lot more realistic to viewers because of this, too.
Money Making
The film’s budget was $248 million, which is a large sum for a studio to remake at the box office. However, producers are hoping that the creativity and behind-the-scenes of filming will be a selling point at the theaters. Plus, who doesn’t want to watch a Ryan Gosling film?
Overall, the public is hoping for another new blockbuster film to enjoy this spring, as there haven’t been any recently.
