With the passing of long-time Chanel creative director Karl Lagerfeld, the brand searched for a suitable replacement. This eventually came in the form of Matthieu Blazy, the former creative director of Bottega Veneta. Blazy, age 41, is a French- Belgian designer who has been in the industry since the mid-2000’s.
His Chanel debut show took place on October 6th, 2025, in the Grand Palais, Paris. In an interview with Vogue, Mattieu stated “‘Chanel is modern’”. And modern was his first collection, with looks combining the classic Coco Chanel look with 21st century styles. With a total of 77 looks, he brought back iconic Chanel tweed and plaid designs, creating something new yet so incredibly Chanel. Mid-length skirts, fun textures, and the classic cut blazers were the show-stoppers of this debut. On top of that, the runway was set up to look like the solar system, with large planets decorating the Palais. Overall, the show was well-balanced, and set up Blazy for the future.
Blazy’s second show took place on December 2nd, 2025, in the decommissioned Bowery subway in New York City, for his first Chanel Métiers d’Art show. With the success of his first show, this was highly anticipated. And boy, did he not disappoint. The show focused on the archetypes of the New York City subway- exploring the fashion trends shown in the city throughout the years. While it held the same classic Chanel shapes, Blazy turned to fun animal prints and suede hand bags, yet, most of all, highlighted the individuality of New York. Many popular models walked the show, including Alex Consani, Awar Odhiang, and Anok Yai.
At the time of publishing this article, Matthieu Blazy debuted his first Spring/Summer 2026 Haute Couture show on January 27th, 2026. A future article review of this show will be posted soon!
