37-year-old Alex Pretti, an ICU nurse, was fatally shot by an ICE agent on the morning of Saturday, January 24th. Videos of the incident show multiple ICE agents wrestling Pretti to the ground before taking his gun and firing around 10 shots. Pretti was a lawful gun owner with a permit to carry. The incident sparked mass controversy across the nation and debate over the validity of ICE’s decisions. As a result of the recent shootings and infiltration by ICE, the Minnesota Timberwolves decided to postpone their upcoming game against the Warriors. The action taken by the Timberwolves was to prioritize the safety of players and Minneapolis citizens as protests were going on in the areas surrounding the stadium. This decision also shows the Timberwolves’ support for the Minneapolis community and rejection of ICE in the neighborhoods.
The game against the Warriors took place the following day, Sunday, January 25th, where the Timberwolves were defeated 111-85. Anthony Edwards led all scorers with 32 points and had a game-high 11 rebounds. Stephen Curry led the charge for the Warriors with 26 points and 6 assists. This game marked the Timberwolves’ 5th straight loss as they moved to 27-19 and 7th in the Western Conference. The two teams met the following day, January 26th, at Target Center in Minneapolis, where the Timberwolves wontook the game 108-83.
