As I walked through the school clubs for the first time, there was only one that caught my eye – the Fashion Club. Set out from the other clubs, there were no posters or candy to draw students in; only flyers, and one extremely fashionable senior. I knew immediately I had to join the club, and I’m so glad I did.
New to Lakota West this year, Fashion Club was started by senior Ace Nyugen and is advised by art teacher Mrs. Flavin. Its leadership members include seniors Dyllon Cornist, Miranda Algie, and Eshan Dube.
The first meeting of Fashion Club was held on August 26th, 2025, in room 281. The meeting went over the basics of what the club was about, and students got to stand up and show off their outfits to the rest of the club. This set the tone for the rest of the meetings–fun, collaborative projects with other students interested in fashion.
I was able to sit down with Ace and talk more in-depth about the club. I had attended the meetings before, but I never knew what the club’s inspirations and goals were. In my inquiry, Ace explained the club’s origins.
“I was actually just scrolling on Instagram one day, and I came across the Mason High School fashion club,” Ace said, as we sat on the floor outside Mrs. Palazzo’s room. “And the next day, I didn’t even know I was gonna go, I went to Mason High School to watch their play Hadestown. And I got to meet and talk to one of the leadership members of the fashion club. I was like, wait, that’s awesome, and we were chatting, and I was like ‘I’m going to create a fashion club at Lakota West High School.’”
He went on to explain the goals of creating the Fashion Club at West.
“It’s just a place for people, the Lakota west community, to bond and create a community through self-expression for fashion”, he said, “I just wanted a place where everyone could express themselves however they wanted.”
The fashion club doesn’t just talk about fashion, they do many activities as well: “So far we’ve made presentations helping people figure out their style, figure out how to dress, how to accessorize, finding their way of self-expression. And then, getting into the actual nitty gritty, we hemmed pants, we went thrifting as a club, we did dress to impress,” explained Ace. “Yeah, that’s what we have so far, like tomorrow [that Friday], we are going to make accessories.”
True to his words, the Fashion Club is one of the most accepting clubs I’ve attended. Anyone can join, and everyone just goes around and talks to each other, even if they didn’t know each other beforehand. The club meets at least three times a month, and most meetings are held on Tuesdays. If you have the chance, try to go to one of the meetings. It really is worth your time.
