This winter has the effect of a slight La Nina. La Nina is a climate pattern that occurs when the waters in the equatorial Pacific Ocean become cooler than average. The cool water in the Pacific then affects the northern U.S, making the temperatures drop. La Nina also brings wetter conditions to the Midwest and Pacific Northwest, while the southern U.S. being dry. With the cooler and wetter conditions, that brings for snow in the Ohio area.
Local Snowfall
Cincinnati last year experienced 29.3 inches of snowfall in the 2024-2025 winter. The average snowfall per winter is 20.5 inches. This year’s winter is expected to match last year’s snowfall of around 29.3 inches. The snowfall on December 2nd, 2025 set that expectation with an extremely rare and significant amount of snowfall in the Cincinnati area for this time of year. The snowfall was so heavy that it equaled or exceeded the entire average snowfall for the month of December in a single day. Cincinnati recorded 4.3 inches at CVG(Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport), shattering the old record of 2.2 inches from 1929 on December 2nd.
I asked David Webster, a student at Lakota West, what his favorite snow activity is and how he feels about the upcoming increase in snow. “My favorite snow activity is definitely snow football,” David said. “Excited, I think snow is very pretty and it’s fun to play in”.
