It’s been a decade since 2016, and our generation is still mourning. Although the calendar might say 2026, some people on social media aren’t acknowledging it. People are using the new year to call for a 2016 renaissance, while others have been wishing for the year’s return before the clock struck midnight.
Why?
Nearing the end of 2025, there was sudden talk about 2016 making a comeback in 2026. The reason people want 2016 back so much is that it seemed like the only time when social media was truly social: before people performed for fame and before AI took over, people had the freedom to post what they felt like posting whenever they felt like it. 2016 was a year about living in the real moment, not shareability. 2016 represented a balance between offline and online culture. There was a version of the internet where people didn’t live in a personalized, mutual-admiration society. People yearn for the ability to live online without constantly performing.
Omg It’s Happening Again!!!
The 2016 filter on TikTok has been trending. TikTok reports that searches for 2016 have gone up 452% in the last week. Statistics also show that Spotify had a 71% increase in the number of songs in its playlists in 2016. Videos from 2016 have been shared on social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram. Users have seen their childhood celebrities post throwback images, old camera-roll rumps, and clips designed to look like it was filmed on an iPhone 7/7 plus. This is more than just nostalgia; this makes you wonder: Is 2016 really back?
