Lakota West: School Lunch Choices

Lakota West: School Lunch Choices

Here at West, our cafeteria staff offers a variety of lunch choices. Some students may find these lunch options effective, while others might not.

What Exactly Do They Have to Offer?

Each day there is a different menu item giving students to have multiple choices. The orange chicken, cheese coneys, pizza crunchers, and the popular chicken nugget Tuesdays are among the student favorites. Aside from the daily menu items, there are a few other options available: cheese pizza, taco bar, chicken patty sandwiches, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, turkey/ham sandwiches, and a “funnable,” which includes a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, a yogurt, string cheese, a fruit, and a vegetable.

Every lunch option is served with two fruits, two vegetables, and a choice of white, chocolate, or strawberry milk. Additionally, students have the choice to buy other drink options and snacks such as chips, cookies, and more.

How Do Students Feel About This?

A couple of students around the building shared their opinions and thoughts on the lunch options provided.  First was a sophomore, Jack Meyman.

“I feel like the school lunch options are fine…they’re not the most delicious but it’s food. If the school added better choices and switched it up, I feel a student like myself would enjoy my lunch way more.”

Senior, Bella Murphey also was one of the students open to sharing a few of her thoughts and opinions.

“I honestly feel like there is not a wide enough selection for the students who have dietary or special needs for their food. If the school could add another lunch choice I would say… it should be maybe something like a salad bar even though they already have the pre-made salads, a lot of them have cross contamination to where you wouldn’t be able to eat them if you had certain dietary needs plus they probably would be more beneficial.”

Based on what Bella Murphey shared, there are other options available to students who prefer different eating choices and those who have issues with certain foods.

“What are the lunch options for vegans and the other different types of eaters or the students who have strict dietary restrictions?” was a commonly asked question. The lunch staff serve black bean burgers, salads, and mentioned previously, the funnables.

Any ideas of what else West should consider adding to its menu?
