Labubu toys have become extremely popular these days, especially on social media platforms, where collectors love to show off their Labubus. The collectable toys were designed by the artist Kasing Lung.
People started buying and selling them for way more than they’re actually worth. First, it was a harmless trend. Then, tension started to grow, and people started to view them as demonic and bringing spirits into people’s lives. People started comparing the Labubu dolls to Annabelle, the famous haunted doll. The theory people have come up with is that owning a Labubu might invite demons into your home or cause supernatural trouble. Kids even started bringing their dolls to church to “purify” it, which goes to show how seriously people are taking this. Concerns surrounding the Labubu toys escalated after a clip featuring a priest discussing Labubu went viral. In the interview, he warned parents of the dolls, calling them “Celeberte demons,” urging parents not to buy one. Then came yet another round of theories that compared the demon Pazuzu to Labubu dolls; in actuality, however, it has nothing to do with Labubu’s beginnings but looks very similar.
Today, Labubu dolls are still as viral on the internet as they were when they first emerged, and people are trying to get creative with pricing them, and overconsumerism never fails to take over when something so silly goes viral.
