The Met Gala is known as the biggest fashion night of the year. Guests are invited by Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour. The event takes place in the Upper East Side of New York City, one of the biggest designer areas in the country. This year, the theme was Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, and most people did not disappoint. But some did. There were big disputes this year about some celebrities not following the theme, leading to lots of hate and mockery on social media. Regardless, there were plenty of major fashion statements, or controversies, from last Monday night that should be covered.
The biggest statement of the night was Rihanna’s third pregnancy announcement with ASAP Rocky. She stepped onto the carpet wearing a suit-skirt from Marc Jacobs to show off her bump. But, the rumor is she is having twins this time due to a comment she made saying, “I brought the kids”. The people won’t know until the kid, or kids, are born. Either way, fans are slightly upset she keeps getting pregnant because it keeps her from releasing more music, which a lot of people love.
Former Vice President Kamala Harris also made a major appearance. She didn’t actually walk on the carpet, but she attended the event itself. She was wearing a custom black and white asymmetrical Off-White dress. She isn’t the first politician to attend the Met Gala, but after losing the 2024 presidential election, people were proud of her for making a big statement.
Katy Perry is a usual invitee at the Met Gala, too, but she actually hasn’t attended since 2022. Over the past three years, editors have been using AI to put her on the Met Gala steps. This year, she was seen stepping out in a half-suit, half metallic dress, which does seem like something she would wear. However, the photo has its faults, like all AI images do. That night, after she came out and said that she was currently on tour and even her mom was with her, people realized that they had fallen victim to AI yet again. People online find it funny that her past few appearances have been fake, but she is getting really irritated because it’s disrespectful to her and hurts her self-esteem.
Personally, I think the Met Gala was a big hit this year, especially since its views have been growing over the years. Some celebrities that I thought really hit were Jenna Ortega in her dress made of rulers. She took on the tailored theme unlike everyone else, and it was stunning. Sabrina Carpenter also looked amazing in a custom Louis Vuitton bodysuit and tailcoat with a long train. Contrary to popular belief, I also thought Zendaya looked amazing. She is known for her outgoing fits every year, but this year, she kept it simple, as she wore a custom white Louis Vuitton zoot suit. I thought it was more than basic, though, because of how perfectly it fitted her. She paid homage to Black dandyism and wore it flawlessly.
Overall, viewers are excited to see what the theme will be for next year and how each celebrity will step on the carpet again.
