Going into draft night, Bengals fans were hoping for some solid defensive picks and growth for the offensive line.
Full Draft Class
Cincinnati went for three defensive picks and three offensive picks. The big one, edge rusher Shemar Stewart, was taken in the first round. Stewart has plenty of raw talent and potential, but is not quite the win-now player fans are looking for. Doubling up in round two, Cincinnati drafted linebacker Demetrius Knight out of South Carolina, looking to add to the depleted defensive core. In the later rounds, they added some pieces that could be solid rotational players, but will likely not touch the field. The Bengals are notorious for being slow in free agency, so if the team wants to contend, this draft class will be vital to its success. Stewart is seen as a project player, but he may prove fans wrong.
Last season’s draft class was underwhelming, but the players have a chance to take a second-year leap. First-rounder Amarius Mims missed time due to injury, but showed promise in the meantime. Kris Jenkins was solid all around and will be looking to make a sophomore leap. Jermaine Burton had some electric plays, but struggled with his character. The proven stars and these draft classes will be very important for Cincinnati’s success next season. While Cincy usually struggles in free agency, they could always break precedent and go big this year. Either way, someone will need to step up for this team come September.
