Here at Lakota West High School (main campus), the school sets a time to extend certain classes; this happens every Wednesday and Thursday and they’re called “Block Days”. The purpose of these days is to give students the opportunity to get help from their teachers. Although it’s a good idea in theory, how it plays out doesn’t necessarily align with most students’ comfort. During block days, students spend 1 hour and 30 minutes in the 4 classes they have that day. There’s a 35 minute increment in between 5th bell and the last bell to get assistance… but that’s just it; 35 minutes. That’s the same time they have an advisory for every normal day. So not only are classes elongated and hard to engage in, but the whole reasoning behind it doesn’t even work that well. It would make more sense if classes were shorter and then at the end of the day, or between bells, there would be a longer time to work with teachers one on one. But that’s just not the case.
“I hate block days…they’re just a waste of time.” Cruz Hamilton; Student at Lakota West.
“I don’t like block days because they make the day longer, and they are already long. Sometimes it’s good for tests because we have more time, but other than that, I don’t like them.” Amerie Sweeten; Student at Lakota West.
