With Winter taking its toll on everyone mentally and physically, and Spring on the way soon, it’s the perfect time to talk about the four seasons and their ranking. The criteria for this ranking will be the weather and climate during the season, the activities that usually go on during the season, the time of the year in terms of school and athletics, and the general vibes of the season. There will be some bias in this ranking as I am currently a Lakota West High School student, but I will try to make as many objective points as possible. Let’s begin with the worst season of the year without further ado.
4) Winter
Before you start hating and disliking the article for this selection, let me explain. All the seasons have their perks and weaknesses, and none of the seasons are necessarily “bad”, however, some are better than others, and Winter just happened to fall in last place. Winter has many great attributes, the number of great holidays being the best. Winter break, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, and snow days combined with the snow can make Winter feel like the best season. Shoveling, drinking hot chocolate, sledding, building snowmen, watching playoff football, and being with family for the holidays are all experiences hard to experience in any other season. However, without the snow, the cold weather of Winter is almost unbearable at times. Winter is when people are outdoors the least, and that’s never a positive. Also, the first half of December can be one of the most stressful parts of the year, with all the exams and the hours spent studying. The days are the shortest they get all year, and there are some days when you’ll get home from school or your job and it’ll already be dark. There’s a reason why seasonal depression is most common during Winter. The lack of daylight, cold weather, and stress of school/work are the weak points of Winter that make it fall in last place.
3) Summer
Next up, we’ve got the polar opposite to Winter. The perks of summer are clear: hot weather, a great time for swimming and being on the beach, and a time to enjoy spending outdoors. With no school, you are pretty much free to do whatever you want in summer, and that’s the beauty of it. You can start a summer job, or gain more hours at your other job. You have the freedom to do things during the day that you normally wouldn’t do with school. The weather is great, and the best summer days are some of the best memories you’ll ever have. It’s also much easier to travel over the summer if you need a vacation. However, the best part of summer are the nights, when all you can hear are the crickets chirping, and the sun is about to set. While there are some great traits of summer, there are also some weaknesses. There are many bugs, such as mosquitoes, wasps, bees, etc. that are annoying to deal with. The weather is great, however, it can get way too hot sometimes during the day when the sun is shining which makes it hard to play sports and do other physical activities. Overall, summer is a great season, but like Winter it’s weather is too extreme to be ranked higher than the next two positions on the list.
2) Fall
It’s tough to choose between the top two seasons on the list, because they both have their perks. Fall is a great season, perfect weather, beautiful atmosphere with the leaves of the trees turning different colors, the start of football season, holidays like Thanksgiving and Halloween. Fellow Lakota West student and weather enthusiast Jack Negrete said this, “Fall is my favorite because of the leaves and the weather”. The weather is better than in summer because it’s not too hot, but also better than in the winter because it’s not too cold. Fall probably has the best sports of the four seasons, with football, basketball, and baseball all being played at the same time. It starts near the beginning of the school year and to me Fall kind of represents the start of a new school year, and it’s always a time filled with excitement for the future of the year. Nature also looks the best when it is fall, and the vibes of the season are unmatched. However, all of this wasn’t able to take my number one spot.
1) Spring
To many, Spring getting the number one spot will be surprising, but let me explain. Spring is number one because it comes at the perfect time. It starts right after Winter ends, and ends right when Summer is about to start. Due to it starting after Winter, the first day of Spring is one of the best of the year. This is because the short, cold days of Winter are finally over, and finally the weather becomes good again. You are able to wear shorts and t-shirts again, and it just feels so nice to be free from the frigid cold of the Winter. The days start becoming longer again, giving time for more activities after school and more opportunities to enjoy nature. Many dislike the amount of rainfall during Spring, but I actually find rain enjoyable, and it gives some photogenic rainbows. March Madness also occurs during the Spring, which is the best sporting event of the year. The school year is near its end and people are gearing up and getting excited for Summer, whereas in Fall you have to get ready for Winter. Life just feels so carefree during the Spring, the opposite feeling to Winter, and that is why it holds my number one spot.
