The Oscars are being held this weekend, and some nominees have created a big controversy. Hosted by Conan O’Brien, the host of Late Nate and The Tonight Show, the Oscars are highly anticipated this year, since big-name movies are in the running.
Karla Sofía Gascón, the lead in Emilia Pérez, has created a big controversy when her past comments on X have been revealed. Emilia Pérez is the most nominated movie of the year, but Gascón’s racist comments toward Muslims in 2020 and 2021 may have blown the movie over. This incident may open up the Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actress awards to other movies like Wicked, Anora, The Brutalist, etc. People really want Wicked to win a lot this year since they didn’t win much at the Golden Globes, but reporters are predicting The Brutalist to win it all.
Amidst all the accusations, the director of Emilia Pérez, Jacques Audiard, thanked all the people he worked with, including “my dear Karla Sofía, that I kiss”. From this response, fans hope the awards Emilia Pérez receives are not based on the actors in it but on the movie itself.
The Brutalist isn’t clean either. Just this past January, editor Dávid Janscó revealed that he used AI for some scenes throughout the movie. He claimed he only used it to make actor Adrien Brody’s Hungarian speech sound more authentic. The public feels that this is still wrong because AI itself is taking away from the work of humans to make the movie. No matter the movie, recently, people will not approve of using AI at all.
Overall, the increased use of social media over the past few years has made these controversies more popular and discussed often. These revelations have even changed the opinions of audiences who watched the movies. Some things are not always one hundred percent true or have been misunderstood, but in the end, the stories behind all of these movies can heavily affect the outcome of the Oscar award ceremony and even other award ceremonies later in the year.
