Jimmy Carter, former president of the United States and Nobel Peace Prize winner, passed away on December 29th, due to natural causes, in his home in Plains, Georgia.
Jimmy Carter leaves behind many family members – this includes his four children, Jack, Chip, Jeff, and Amy, his eleven grandchildren, and fourteen great-grandchildren.
“My father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and unselfish love,” said Chip Carter, the former president’s son. He left these comments to the Carter Center, a nonprofit and nongovernmental organization created by Jimmy Carter to fight diseases, advance democracy and human rights, and improve mental health care.
The funeral was held on January 9th, where Carter was transported to Washington National Cathedral. The national service ran from 10 to 11 am and was attended by Bill and Hillary Clinton, George W. Bush and Laura Bush, Barack and Michelle Obama, Donald and Melania Trump, and many other notable figures.
Carter was then flown back to Georgia, where a private service attended only by his family took place at Maranatha Baptist Church, the same church where Carter attended Sunday school as a child and held the funeral services for his wife, First Lady Rosalynn Carter, back in 2023.
According to the New York Times, Jimmy Carter will be buried in a private cemetery next to his wife. Before the interment, the Navy will honor Carter by doing a missing man formation flyover.
“While we mourn my grandfather’s passing, I know in my heart, and you all do, that his legacy will live on not only because of the millions of people that he touched across the globe but very specifically because of your spirit and your knowledge and the work and the track record that you do every day,” said Jason Carter, Jimmy Carter’s grandson, live on C-SPAN.
