Shari Franke, the eldest Daughter of a once-popular family YouTube Vlogger Ruby Franke, is sharing her side of the story in her Memoir, “The House of My Mother.”
Ruby Franke launched the “8 passengers” channel in 2015, featuring her husband and six kids. The channel had around 2.3 million subscribers. Videos on the channel consisted of parenting, school life vlogging, and life in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In 2023, the channel was removed from YouTube.
Although the channel portrayed a perfect family, something deeper was taking place behind the scenes. Over the years, viewers grew concerned about Ruby’s extreme parenting methods. In response, she would partner with Jodi Hildebrandt and continue advocating for strict parenting.
In August 2023, Ruby and Jodi were arrested for aggravated child abuse after the youngest son asked a neighbor to call the police after escaping Hildebrandt’s home. The police found Ruby’s two youngest children in the home. Police said they found the children “emaciated and malnourished, with open wounds and duct tape around their arms and legs.”
On Jan 7, Shari, Ruby’s daughter, published her memoir titled The House of My Mother: A Daughter’s Quest for Freedom, where she reflected on the abuse she and her siblings experienced. She told PEOPLE that writing it was an effort to share her side of the story and shed light on the dangers of family vlogging.
“I’ve witnessed the damage of what happens when your life is put online,” she said. “There’s no ethical way to do it.”
