Skincare, and Makeup: How are they connected?
By: Lma Abdoh
As we get older, skin care starts to matter more. It is super important to wash our face daily, use sunscreen, and moisturize our skin to keep a healthy and glowing skin. Healthy and prepared skin even helps a better makeup look, it is the best base for makeup.
Makeup has been rising in popularity especially through social media, like a trend. Makeup trends are constantly changing, and spreading fast. The younger generations have gotten used to makeup and it is mostly normalized. A few years ago, especially around 2016, people were really into heavy makeup, like thick brows and heavy contour, etc. The current trend for makeup is soft, light makeup. However people still have their preferences, and it has grown into a big spectrum of types of makeup, and many many makeup companies. Makeup can also be a way of showing creativity when practicing looks and styles, as well as adding to them which is an act of creativity for many makeup artists.
Makeup is however also perceived as a way to “boost confidence” or “hide insecurities”, for some people that’s self-care. To be able to bring out their favorite features or hide the things they wouldn’t like to show, to others is a way to accept yourself which eventually lowers self-esteem. People may feel like they’re less pretty or ugly unless they wear it. Beauty standards are a struggle for many people, especially teenagers. It could be a feeling of pressure, or being influenced by the trends and people around you. Makeup can, and should, be a way to express yourself, and not hide yourself away.
Makeup companies, especially the viral and expensive ones, have a good reputation for having clean products, however, one should be careful because not all skin types are the same, and not all products have the same effect on different skins. That takes us back to why skin care is way more important than makeup.
Makeup has brought many different people together, especially through social media, it is very diverse and it is for every and any one. People should feel free to express themselves through makeup if that’s their type of art, however, being careful of our skin is still important.
