The Bengals add to a long list of one-score losses, this time in a crucial game to an AFC North Rival.
Game Recap
Despite scoring 38 points, the team lost in a shootout to the Steelers 44-38. It was a rollercoaster of a game, with both teams’ defenses scoring touchdowns for their teams. The Bengals put points up on the board first, thanks to a 51-yard pick-six from corner Cam Taylor-Britt. From there, the Pittsburgh offense did not look back, scoring on their next five possessions. Burrow and the offense tried to keep up, but costly turnovers and a frustrating number of penalties held them back. The defense looked atrocious, allowing Russell Wilson over 400 yards and 3 touchdowns. Najee Harris led the ground game with an efficient 75 rushing yards and 1 rushing touchdown. Burrow threw for 300 yards and 3 touchdowns but had 3 turnovers, one of which went back for a Steeler touchdown. Despite the turnovers, the offense still had a strong showing with nearly 400 yards of offense and 38 points.
Looking Forward
The offense has now scored 4 or more points in four straight weeks, with a 1-3 record in those games. After this game, it’s looking more and more likely that we are looking at a lost season. Despite an MVP-caliber year from Joe Burrow, the Bengals have a 4-8 record and are sinking farther and farther in the AFC’s standings. Cincinnati needs to win out at minimum for a playoff spot. Their next three opponents (Dallas, Tennessee, and Cleveland) all have losing records. If those three games are won, they will have a huge game against Denver at home, followed by a rematch in Pittsburgh. Regardless, they will need help and many things to go their way. According to ESPN, Cincinnati has a four percent chance at victory. Cincinnati looks gloomy, and it might be time to look towards next season.
