The upcoming Lakota West 2024 homecoming has been causing quite a stir, particularly regarding the theme of Neon for the dance. Many students have expressed their dissatisfaction with the chosen theme and have indicated that they do not plan to adhere to it. While a few students are enthusiastic about following the theme, the majority seem to be opting for alternative attire for the event.

While there are a lot of students who are not satisfied with the dance theme itself, the students look to be pretty enthusiastic about spirit week. Most students interviewed look to be more excited for the spirit week themes except one…western day. The students seem to like dressing down with pajamas and other casual wear but not Western style. The interviewees think the Western Day seems random and out of the blue.

Students were polled on whether or not they were going to follow the theme. 96% of students stated that they would not be following the theme while only 4% were in favor of it. Other students were also asked how they would’ve wanted Spirit Week to go. One particular interviewee caught our eye because of how descriptive they expressed their opinion on Spirit Week. A senior, Savannah Livingston, expressed how she felt about Spirit Week. She mentioned how she felt that almost every year, they reuse the same themes so it makes it boring to follow. She explained that if the themes were funnier, people would be more likely to follow them rather than ignore them. 

People’s thoughts on Spirit Week and homecoming themes have taken a toll on the students of Lakota West.  The negative views on homecoming week have disappointed many students looking forward to it.  Based on accurate results of passing students, many reportedly argued how it “could have been better,” or is “lacking” their interest.  Though many students have shown interest in participating in Spirit Week, it almost feels like a letdown to the people passionate about the upcoming events.  Even when deprived of seemingly creative themes, our classmates seem to still have hope that this year’s homecoming will be one to remember.
