September 15th marks the start of Hispanic Heritage Month! For thirty days, Americans recognize and appreciate Hispanic/Latino Americans and their influence on American culture.
Hispanic Heritage Month starts in the middle of the month because most Central America countries celebrate their Independence days during this time. On September 15th Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua celebrate their Independence Day. The 16th is Mexico’s Independence Day, the 18th is Chile’s, the 21st is Belize’s Independence Day and so many more!
There are many ways Latin American countries celebrate their Independence Day and it often varies between countries. In Mexico, the president celebrates with a famous battle cry called “El Grito”. Some countries celebrate with big parades and lots of floats. In Columbia, Independence Day is celebrated by beauty pageants, memorials, and historic dances. But these Independence Days aren’t just celebrated in Central and South America. Even in Ohio, Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated by parades and large gatherings –and of course food.
One of the most famous styles of food comes from Latino culture. Tex-Mex/Mexican is a common feature in America taking traditional meals with a twist. The delicious dishes first started in the 1800s and have become very popular across the country. While chain restaurants are good, it’s nothing compared to homemade tortillas, arepas, and tostones. There are many local/family-owned restaurants available in the Cincinnati area that will surely not be a letdown!
The history of Latin art goes back decades all stemming from a variety of styles but all having vibrant colors. Judy Baca used murals in the Chicano Movement to tell the stories of her ancestors. Antonio Sotomayor is famous for his imaginative paintings. Ana Mendieta created art through amazing film pieces from her personal experiences of exile.
Hispanic Heritage Month ends October 15th, so why not go out with friends and enjoy some Latin food, visit museums, and experience the influence of Latin American culture? There’s no reason not to expand and learn about so many amazing cultures!
