The summer of 2024 has been a very entertaining one for the music industry, with many artists releasing new music and many receiving their breakthrough hits. Let’s dive in and look at the charts, stats, and news in music for the summer of 2024!
Songs of the Summer:
There are multiple contenders for Song of the Summer. Many artists released new, successful music, with many of them having some of the biggest hits of their careers to this point.
A prime example of this is Chappell Roan, an artist relatively unknown until late last year and early this year. She released her album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess on September 22, 2023, which included hits like “Pink Pony Club,” “Casual,” and “HOT TO GO,” which became popular with her fans and a lot of mainstream pop listeners too. However, it was her follow-up single “Good Luck, Babe!” that would prove to be her biggest song yet, peaking at No.6 on the Billboard Hot 100 in August of 2024.
Another artist who made waves this summer on the pop music scene was Sabrina Carpenter with her singles “Espresso” and “Please Please Please.” The two songs both made it into the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100, with “Espresso” peaking at No.3 and “Please Please Please” reaching the No.1 spot on the chart just three weeks after its release in June. Both songs have remained in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 since June. Following the success of these songs, Sabrina Carpenter released her sixth studio album Short n’ Sweet which so far has received both positive and negative reviews from listeners. Some say that the album is too raunchy with many sexual references, while others have praised the album for its witty and satirical lyrics.
One big artist whose impact and rebranding we can’t ignore is Post Malone’s. He released his sixth studio album F-1 Trillion in August, which included a major rebrand; switching from his pop and rap roots to a country sound infused with some pop inspirations. The lead single from the album, “I Had Some Help,” which featured country music star Morgan Wallen, had massive success following its release, placing at the top of the Billboard Hot 100. The album as a whole did exceptionally well. Multiple songs from the album featured top country stars such as Blake Shelton, Jelly Roll, Tim McGraw, Lainey Wilson, Luke Combs, Chris Stapleton, and the queen of country music herself, Dolly Parton, just to name a few.
Irish singer and songwriter Hozier has had a strong comeback to the charts this summer with the release of his song “Too Sweet” in March of 2024. The song reached No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on April 12th, 2024 after debuting at No.5 the previous week. “Too Sweet” has remained in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 through most of the summer, falling to No.11 to round out the month of August.
One of this year’s most successful breakout stars has to be Teddy Swims. His song “Lose Control” has remained on the Billboard Hot 100 for over a year, remaining in the top 10 throughout the summer, and reached No.1 on March 30th, 2024. The song was his first song to debut on the chart in his career.
The list of contenders for Song of the Summer wouldn’t be complete without Charlie xcx’s sixth studio album brat, which was released on June 7th, 2024. The album was received well by listeners, with the song “Apple” inspiring a dance trend on the social media platform TikTok. Brat also featured hits like “360” and “Von dutch,” while the deluxe version of the album, Brat and it’s the same but there’s three more songs so it’s not, included the song “Guess,” which she later released as a single featuring Billie Eilish. The album was rolled out with the “brat green” coloring and the “#bratsummer” trending on social media, which helped boost its popularity over the summer.
One song to be on the lookout for as another possible contender for Song of the Summer is Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars’s new duet “Die With A Smile,” which was released on August 16th, 2024. The song has quickly grown in popularity following its release, debuting at No.3 on the Billboard Hot 100 to round out the month of August. The song has been praised for its stunning vocals, with the two stars’ voices blending well together. The song has enough momentum to potentially reach No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song is Gaga’s 18th top 10 hit, while it is Mars’s 19th.
