While the past two years have been nothing but predictable, predicting fashion trends for this year is definitely NOT predictable. With fast fashion becoming more popular because of social media and micro-trends, keeping up with what’s new can be hard. This 2022 fashion trend forecast will predict what will likely be seen later this year.

Very Peri is the New Color

Last year, neutral colors such as beige, brown, and tan became popular, along with the whole minimalist aesthetic. The color of 2022 is Very Peri, so expect to see the warm blue hue integrated into outfits. Instead of the minimalist aesthetic that was seen in 2020 and 2021, this year it may be a maximalist color trend instead. 

Statement Pieces (hats, jewelry, etc.)

To start off, I think that this year’s statement pieces will be a big deal.  Outfits put together will be bold with pieces that stand out. For example, bucket hats became trendy again in the past few years, and more varieties of hats will become more popular with more unique pieces both on the runway and on the streets. They will range from baker’s caps, balaclavas, hats with different textures, and headpieces that stand out like those from Simone Rocha’s spring and summer 2020 line. Jewelry pieces that catch the eye such as Shana Cave and Jiwinaia have already started to become trendy since the end of last year. Their rings, necklaces, and earrings all make a statement while having a sophisticated fit that goes with many outfits.

Puffer Everything

This past winter bright and pastel-colored puffer coats have become popular,  and as the coats became more popular, the puffer trend spread in other areas. While I’m not a fan of using puffer material for shoes, I’ve seen Northface jump on to this trend fairly quickly. A personal favorite of mine is Miu Miu’s fall-winter 2021 ready-to-wear collection with their puffer bags and hats. I also think that puffers with bold and different designs will be seen more as the cold weather comes in. 

Knitwear and Comfortable Pieces

Since many people have had to study or work from home, knitwear and comfort are the top priority when choosing what to wear. And with places opening back up, people will want to continue to be in comfort while doing daily activities. 

Upcycling and Vintage Pieces

Thrifting has become really popular among GenZ as it is a way to find affordable and distinctive pieces that can be changed to fit one’s style. Even though thrifting has its cons like prices constantly rising, and people emptying stores, it will only continue to become more popular.  Luckily online shops have picked up onthis popularity and have been selling their finds. Like any other trend, celebrities are constantly seen wearing rare pieces and of course, others will follow. Vintage pieces from Vivienne Westwood and Maison Margiela can be found at shops but the prices may be crazy expensive for some. As a result, many head down to the thrift to find similar pieces and recreate the outfits seen. I recommend this as a way to have pieces that you only own and it’s good for the environment. 

Bold Shoes

This year I think we will have more platforms and jelly shoes. I’ve seen many students wear crocs here at West, so I assume that will continue this year. But I think jelly shoes will follow soon enough. The look and the shine of jelly shoes are what make them stand out. Jelly shoes were a huge hit during the 90s and will probably resurface as the Y2K trend continues to become popular, along with its hint of nostalgia. Loafers and platform shoes have also been on the rise. Doc Martens have been a timeless item but have really started to gain popularity —  they are simple shoes that add a hint of grunge to an outfit. Cowboy boots have been on the rise too, they can range from the stereotypical brown boots to pink ones covered with hearts.
