Setting your New Years Resolutions

Setting+your+New+Years+Resolutions

So as you know, it’s January, and therefore people are starting their New Year’s resolution. People everywhere are coming up with new ways to better themselves.  Have you come up with a New Year’s resolution? Research shows that “Setting goals helps trigger new behaviors, helps guide your focus and helps you sustain that momentum in life. Goals also help align your focus and promote a sense of self-mastery. … Setting goals not only motivates us, but can also improve our mental health and our level of personal and professional success” Making goals and resolutions is positive for people. It will help you become your dream self.

If you are unsure about what kind of goals you want to make for yourself in this new year, first, look at what you want out of life and figure out what you need to change in order to get that.  Some resolutions my friends made were “going to the gym and getting into shape,” “being more positive,” “growing my hair out,” and“getting a job.” In reality, though, those are just really big goals and you can not get them unless you change your everyday habits to fit your goal.  You can not get into shape by just going to the gym unless you start eating healthier foods and growing your stamina. You can not be more positive unless you change your thoughts and tell yourself the positive side of things. Changing your everyday habits will help you achieve your goals faster rather than just setting goals and hoping you get there by having the same attitude and habits you had before.

When people make goals or New Year’s resolutions, one of the number one things that hurt people completing a goal is if they lose motivation. Research shows that there are many different ways to stay motivated. “Approach tasks in new ways. Sometimes just getting started might be the problem. A different approach might give you a new perspective and more energy. Tackle procrastination head-on. Don’t make excuses or waste time rationalizing why you haven’t already started. Instead, try to uncover the real reason for the delay and get to work immediately. The best way to begin something is just to begin. Keep it fun.”  For example,  one way I stay motivated is I do not tell anyone my goals —  I keep it all to myself.

I interviewed some of our West sophomores, who have made big goals and achieved them and are still working to this day, to see how they keep motivated, why they chose the goals, and what they did to get there.  One person noted “I kept going to the gym because I liked seeing the progress I was making and I like feeling stronger and looking better. My goal was to put on more muscle mass because I was skinny. And I wanted to look better.”- anonymous

New year resolutions are a common thing people do on the 1st of the year. They could be anything from being nicer-getting stronger. Many people quit after three months. They either get where they wanna go and give up. Or they do not get where they wanna go and think of it as too hard so they stop. Hopefully, if you are one of those people this article helped. Have fun accomplishing your goals!!
