As you walk around the halls of Lakota West, you may notice some names not only on walls in front of the classroom doors, but other names hanging from the banners on Main Street. One of these names is the Lakota West gym teacher and baseball coach, Coach Gschwind. A very recognized alumni, Coach G was a student athlete here at Lakota West, playing basketball and baseball all four years of high school, which included the big state championship for baseball won in 2007.
I got the chance to meet with Coach G and get a little better understanding of his experience at West and why he came back to become the baseball coach. Coach G was a multi-sport athlete. Along with baseball, he was on the basketball team, playing alongside his older brother, Ryan. Coach G attributed his brother as being a very big influence in his sports career. His brother constantly pushed him to be better, and Coach G worked as hard as he could to be as good as him. While Coach G liked basketball, his best sport was baseball. He fell in love with the game at a very young age and always knew he would want to play it at the highest level he could. While playing baseball at West, he got the chance to be coached by arguably one of the best highschool coaches of all time, Coach Dreisbach. He would always join the players and show them how it was done rather than standing there telling them what to do. Coach Dreisbach made a huge impact on coach G in both his sports life and personal life, and because of this Coach G always knew he wanted to become a coach and try to make an impact on the players just like coach Dreisbach did for him. Coach G would end up getting the chance to play college baseball at Miami University where he would end up majoring in education. After graduation, he would end up coaching himself, all possible because of his friends and staff around him.
