Viajando a Otro Pais

Arriving in a New Country

Have you been to a new place or in a completely different situation than the one you know? Most likely yes… Do you remember how you felt at that moment?

Getting out of your comfort zone is a great challenge but at the same time, it is a very brave decision.

A year ago I was living my life as I knew it, having fun with my friends, spending a day like everyone else, when suddenly my mom called me and told me that I was going to come to the United States.   I could barely get some things together … I was so happy because after three years I was going to meet my parents. The fear, though,  was so great that I didn’t know how I would make everything work if I didn’t speak English. I didn’t even think about what it would be like to live here.

Everything was going well until it was time to go to school; I was so scared. Coming to another country, speaking in another language, having other customs is not easy. I remember I had an acting class, but in classes, it was so complicated because I didn’t even know what to say.  I didn’t know what they were talking about. Every day I was nervous. I wondered what would happen if I made a mistake or said something wrong and others made fun of me. I did not enjoy the classes as I used to in my country, and when it comes to English my brain first translates into Spanish. I understand it, and then I think the answer obviously in Spanish, but I have to then try to translate it into English to finally say it. It is so complicated when you can’t pronounce the language correctly. Maybe that only happens to me, but I think that everyone who has tried to learn a language identifies.

It’s frustrating when you want to communicate with people, when you want to make new friends, share ideas, tastes, learn more about other things and you can’t because they don’t speak the same language, so remember – be kind and patient nor only with others, also with yourself.

In life there are always going to be ups and downs. The important thing is to enjoy each step of the process. Seize every moment as if it were your last. I am not someone to judge anyone or to tell you what to do but I give you some advice: value how little or how much you have. Don’t be afraid to learn new things or what other people will say, nobody is perfect and it is normal to make mistakes, also you never know what a person is going through so always be kind.
